What the US checklist asks for

Renunciation is the one Indian consular application most people file exactly once, right after taking US citizenship, which is why so few know its photo rules. The checklist used by the Indian missions in the US asks for:

• Two identical printed photos, 2x2 inches (51x51 mm)
• Colour, front pose, taken within the last 6 months
• Strictly white background: no grey, cream, or shadowed walls
• No glasses, neutral expression, nothing else in the frame

The same photo also has to be uploaded on the government form before you print it (more on that below, because skipping it gets the whole application returned).

Your Indian passport photos are the wrong size

The natural move is to reuse the photos from your last Indian passport application. Since September 2025, those are 35x45 mm ICAO photos, and they cannot be turned into a 2x2.

It is not just a resize problem. We ran the same portrait through our cropper against both specs (July 2026): the passport spec puts a 37.1 mm head on the 45 mm print, and the tallest square you can cut from that print is 35 mm. The head is taller than the square, so any 2x2 cut from a compliant Indian passport photo clips the crown or the chin. The two specs also start from different source crops entirely; from one identical photo, the 2x2 frame came out roughly 37% wider than the passport frame.

So treat renunciation as its own photo, shot or generated fresh at 2x2. If you have leftover prints from an OCI application, those are already 2x2 and work, as long as they are under 6 months old and you look the same.

Which size checklist you are on

Indian missions are mid-migration on photo formats. The passport moved to the ICAO 35x45 mm standard in September 2025, and some missions’ 2026 surrender checklists (Australia, for example) now list 35x45 mm for renunciation too. The US checklist from the Embassy in Washington DC and VFS USA still lists 2x2 inches as of July 2026.

Before printing, open the current checklist PDF linked from your VFS USA application page and read the photo line. This page’s photo tool carries both sizes for that reason: 2x2 as the primary US spec, 35x45 mm as the alternate if your checklist has switched.

Upload first, then two prints

The renunciation form is filled in online on the government portal, and uploading your photo and signature there is mandatory. VFS returns couriered applications that skipped the upload, unprocessed, which restarts your timeline by weeks. The order that works:

1. Fill the online declaration form and upload the photo and signature images when prompted.
2. Print the completed form, and paste one printed photo where the form asks for it.
3. Include the second print loose in the package with your passport and citizenship documents.

Keep the digital file you uploaded and the prints from the same shot. A mismatch between the uploaded photo and the pasted one is an avoidable query from the consulate.

Where to get the photo in the US

Here 2x2 works in your favor: it is the standard US passport photo size, so any US photo counter can produce it. Ask for a regular US passport photo; do not ask for an “Indian passport photo,” which gets you the 35x45 mm size that fails the checklist.

Whichever route you take, you need both a digital file for the online form and two physical prints, so check that the counter gives you the digital copy too. Some charge extra for it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my OCI photos for renunciation? Yes, the size matches: both are 2x2 inch squares on a white background. They must still be under 6 months old. Most people file renunciation first and OCI second, so in practice it is the renunciation photos that get reused for OCI, which works the same way.

Do my kids need their own renunciation photos? Yes. Every family member who held an Indian passport files their own surrender application with their own two photos, minors included. The minor checklist has its own document list but the same photo spec.

My naturalization was years ago. Do the photos need to be recent? The photos must be taken within the last 6 months regardless of when you naturalized. The renunciation fee structure differs based on how long ago you acquired foreign citizenship, but the photo recency rule does not change.

Is the uploaded photo checked against the prints? The consulate expects them to be the same photo. Upload the exact image you print, not a different shot from the same session.
