Why passport photos get rejected
Most rejections come down to a few recurring problems. Here is what each one looks like and how to fix it, so you know what to watch for in your own photo.
Head too large or too small
Every passport spec sets a head-height range, usually around 50 to 69 percent of the frame. Standing too close makes the head fill too much of the photo; standing too far makes it too small to verify. This is the single most common reason a photo is rejected, and it is exactly what the checker above measures.
Background not plain white
Most countries require a plain white or light gray background with no texture, color, or objects behind you. A wall that looks white to your eye can read as cream or blue to a reviewer. Shoot against a true white wall in even light, with space between you and the wall.
Shadow on the background
A shadow behind your head turns a plain background into a patterned one. It usually happens when you stand too close to the wall or use a single side light. Step away from the wall and light your face evenly from the front.
Uneven light on the face
Side lighting throws a shadow across half the face and hides features the reviewer needs to see. Face a window or two even light sources so both sides of your face are lit the same. No harsh shadow under the chin or nose.
Glare or glasses
Most countries now ask you to remove glasses entirely. If you keep them, any glare on the lenses or frames covering the eyes will fail. The simplest fix is to take the photo without glasses.
