You need two photos, in two different forms
The thing that confuses most OCI applicants in the US is that “the photo” is actually two deliverables:
- One digital photo you upload to the ociservices.gov.in portal while filling in the application.
- Two printed photos (51x51mm) you physically hand over at your VFS Global appointment.
They are the same picture, just a digital file and prints. So you take one compliant photo and produce both from it. Bring a spare print too: VFS occasionally asks for a third copy, and a missing photo means a repeat trip.
The exact OCI photo specs
OCI uses the 51x51mm square, separate from the new ICAO 35x45mm Indian passport spec adopted in September 2025:
- Size: 51x51mm (2x2 inches), square. Same as a US passport photo.
- Background: plain light-coloured, white is standard. Not a patterned or shadowed wall.
- No glasses, including prescription glasses.
- Head size: roughly 70-80% of the frame height, the face fills most of the photo.
- Recent, taken within the last 6 months and reflecting your current appearance.
The digital upload cap that fails most people
The ociservices.gov.in portal wants a JPEG between 600x600 and 900x900 pixels and under 200KB. That 200KB limit is the trap: a phone photo is several megabytes, so it has to be compressed before the portal will accept it. It is not 500KB, and it is not the same as the US passport digital spec.
