Passport Photos for a Family of 4: What Each Option Really Costs (2026)

Four people needing passport photos at the same time is the most expensive way to buy them, because every counter charges per person. Here is the July 2026 math, using the prices we track in our per-retailer guides (per-person prices and store details live in our passport photo cost guide and cheapest options roundup; this page is only about what happens when you multiply by four).

Why the family multiplier hurts

A passport photo counter bundles three things into its fee: the staff time, the camera, and two small prints. The marginal cost of the second, third, and fourth family member is close to zero for the store, but the fee structure charges each of them the full rate. Four per-person fees buy one sheet of photo paper and a few minutes of staff time.

Doing it yourself inverts that. The work (setting up a wall, taking the photos, checking compliance) is the same whether one person needs a photo or four. You do that work once and the incremental family member costs nothing but their turn in front of the camera.

What the $6.35 actually buys

We generated a four-person sheet through the Family Pack on July 3, 2026 to verify what checkout looks like: pick one country and document type, upload one photo per person, and the tool crops each face to spec and lays everyone out on a single printable sheet. With four people on the default 4×6 size we got six photos, split 2, 2, 1, 1, with cutting guides between them. Checkout was $6 flat for the pack, with an optional human expert review of all four photos for $9.99 more.

The remaining $0.35 is the pharmacy kiosk print. A 4×6 sheet prints as an ordinary photo (Walmart’s kiosk charges $0.39, most pharmacies around $0.35). One print covers the whole family; a US passport application needs one photo per person.

When the counter still wins

An honest list, because the counter is not always the wrong call:

• One person, one deadline, today. For a single traveler in a hurry, $14.99 at a Walgreens with no appointment is a reasonable convenience buy, and Walmart at $7.64 is cheaper still.
• Nobody available to hold the camera. The DIY route needs one person behind the phone. A solo applicant with no photographer nearby may find the counter simpler than a tripod and timer.
• You want zero responsibility for compliance. If a store takes the photo and the photo is rejected, the store retakes it. With DIY, the compliance check is the tool’s job and the guarantee backs it, but you are the one pressing the shutter.

What the counter never wins on, for a family, is price. Even the cheapest in-store option (Walmart) costs almost five times the Family Pack route once four people are involved.
