Understanding Passport Photo Dimensions

Physical Print Size

The overall photo dimensions (width × height). This is what you need when printing photos at a drugstore.

  • US: 2×2 inches = 51×51mm
  • EU: 35×45mm = 1.4×1.8 inches
  • Canada: 50×70mm = 2×2.75 inches

Head Size Requirements

The height of your head within the frame (chin to crown). This is often more strictly enforced than overall photo size.

  • US: 25-35mm (50-69% of frame)
  • EU: 32-36mm (70-80% of frame)
  • Canada: 31-36mm (44-51% of frame)

Our Tool Handles This Automatically

You don't need to measure anything. Select your country and document type, and our AI validates both the photo size and head size requirements automatically.

Passport Photo Size FAQ

Why are passport photo sizes different by country?

Passport photo standards were set before international coordination. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) now recommends 51×51mm (2×2 inches), but many countries established their own standards decades ago. The EU standardized on 35×45mm in the 1990s, which most European and Asian countries adopted.

Can I use the same photo for multiple countries?

Only if they use the exact same size. For example, US passport photos (51×51mm) work for Indian passports since both use ICAO standards. But a US photo won't work for UK passports (35×45mm) — you'd need to crop it down, which would make the head size too large.

What's the pixel size for digital passport photos?

At 300 DPI (print resolution): 2×2 inches = 600×600 pixels, 35×45mm = 420×540 pixels, 50×70mm = 600×840 pixels. For online submissions, requirements vary — the US accepts 600-1200 pixels square, while some countries want 600×600 exactly. Our tool generates the correct pixel dimensions for your country automatically.

What happens if my passport photo is 1mm too small or too big?

It will likely be rejected. Most passport agencies use templates with precise cut-outs — if your photo is off by even 1-2mm, it won't fit properly or will fail automated scanning. The US State Department, for example, has a tolerance of about ±2mm, but it's safer to be exact. This is why drugstore photo services use precision cutters.

Do visa photos use the same size as passport photos?

Usually, but not always. US visa photos use the same 51×51mm size as US passports. Schengen visas use 35×45mm like EU passports. But some countries (like China) use different sizes for visas vs passports. Always check the specific visa requirements for the country you're applying to.
