Australia Visa Photo Requirements for UK Applicants
Applying for an Australian visa from the UK? The photo size is the same 35x45mm you already use for your UK passport. But the rules are different in ways that catch British applicants out — especially on expression and background colour.
Key Differences from UK Passport
Same 35×45mm size. But: Australia requires white background (UK allows grey/cream), no smiling at all (UK is more lenient), no glasses, and ImmiAccount needs a JPEG, minimum 420×540 pixels, 50KB–500KB.
| Size | 35 × 45mm (same as UK passport) |
| Background | White or light grey (UK allows cream — Australia does not) |
| Glasses | Not permitted (UK also bans glasses since 2016) |
| Expression | Neutral only — no smiling at all |
| Digital upload | 420×540px min, JPEG, 50KB–500KB |
| Recency | Within last 6 months |
Same Size, Stricter Rules
UK passport and Australian visa photos are both 35×45mm — so the size is not the problem. The differences that trip up British applicants are the background colour and the stricter expression rule:
1. Background colour
UK passport photos use a plain light-coloured background — white, cream, or light grey are all accepted. Australian visa photos require white or light grey only. If your UK passport photo has a cream or off-white background, it will not pass Australian requirements.
2. No glasses
The UK has banned glasses in passport photos since 2016 — no exceptions. Australia also does not permit glasses in visa photos. So neither country allows glasses, but for different reasons and different start dates (UK since 2016, Australia since January 2024). Remove all glasses before taking your photo.
3. No smiling — strictly enforced
Both countries technically require a “neutral expression.” In practice, the UK is more lenient — a natural, relaxed expression is usually fine. Australia enforces this strictly. A slight smile, raised eyebrows, or open mouth will get your photo rejected.
Check your existing photo
Before reusing your UK passport photo for an Australian visa, check three things: (1) Is the background white, not cream or grey? (2) Are you wearing glasses? (3) Is your expression completely neutral? If any answer is wrong, take a new photo.

Popular Australian Visas for British Applicants
Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417)
This is the big one for Brits. The UK is one of the top source countries for Australian Working Holiday Visas. Available for ages 18-35, it lets you live and work in Australia for up to 3 years (with extensions). You can apply entirely online through ImmiAccount.
Other common visa types
- Skilled Worker Visa (subclass 482) — Employer-sponsored work visa for professionals with skills on Australia’s shortage list.
- Tourist Visa (subclass 600) — For holidays or visiting family. Processing from the UK typically takes 15-25 days.
- Partner Visa (subclass 309/100) — For partners of Australian citizens or permanent residents.
- eVisitor (subclass 651) — For short visits under 3 months. Free and processed quickly, but still requires a compliant photo.
All visa subclasses use the same 35×45mm photo requirement.
Where to Apply: London
Online (most applications): Lodge through ImmiAccount. Upload your digital photo as part of the application.
VFS Global London: For biometrics collection (fingerprints and photo capture). Book through the VFS Global website.
Australian High Commission: Located on The Strand, London WC2. Handles complex cases, but most routine applications go through ImmiAccount and VFS Global.
Working Holiday tip
Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) applications open on 1 July each year and places fill quickly. Have your compliant photo ready before the application window opens. The entire application is online through ImmiAccount — you don’t need to visit VFS Global unless biometrics are requested.
Common Mistakes British Applicants Make
- Reusing a UK passport photo with a cream or grey background. Australia requires white or light grey. The cream backgrounds common in UK Boots and Post Office photos may not pass.
- Wearing glasses in an old photo. UK passport photos have also banned glasses since 2016, so recent UK photos should be glasses-free. But if you are reusing an older photo, check it does not include glasses — Australia will reject it.
- Slight smile. British applicants often have a natural slight smile in photos. Australia will reject it. Practice a completely neutral, relaxed expression.
- Using a photo from a UK photo booth. Many UK photo booths produce images against grey backgrounds. Check the background colour matches Australian requirements before using it.
- Wrong digital dimensions. UK passport digital photos are 600×750 pixels. ImmiAccount accepts 420×540 to 1200×1600 pixels, so UK dimensions may work — but verify the file format is JPEG and background is white.
Where to Get Your Photo in the UK
| Method | Price | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Online tool + self print | ~£0.80 ($1) | 3 minutes |
| Boots photo service | £6-12 | 10-15 min |
| Post Office photo service | £10-15 | 10-15 min |
| Photo booth (Tube stations, etc.) | £5-8 | 5 min |
If using a high street service, specifically ask for “Australian visa photo, white background, no glasses, neutral expression.” Do not assume a UK passport photo will work — the background colour is the most common issue.
Timeline reminder
Tourist visa (subclass 600) processing from the UK takes 15-25 business days. Working Holiday Visa is usually faster — often processed within days. Skilled worker visas can take several months. Apply early and have your photo ready before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my UK passport photo for an Australian visa?
Possibly, but only if it has a white background (not grey or cream), shows no glasses, has a strictly neutral expression, and was taken within the last 6 months. Many UK passport photos won't qualify because of the background colour difference.
What's different between UK passport and Australian visa photo rules?
Three key differences: Australia requires a white or light grey background (UK allows cream/grey), Australia bans glasses (UK also bans them since 2016, so this one is the same), and Australia requires a strictly neutral expression with no smile at all.
Can I wear glasses in my Australian visa photo?
No. Australia does not permit glasses in visa photos. The UK also bans glasses in passport and visa photos (since 2016). Neither country allows them — remove all glasses before taking your photo.
Can I smile in my Australian visa photo?
No. Australia requires a neutral expression with your mouth closed. The UK passport guidance also says neutral, but in practice is more lenient. Australia will reject even a slight smile.
What are the digital photo specs for ImmiAccount?
JPEG format, minimum 420×540 pixels, file size between 50KB and 500KB. The photo must be a colour photo, not a scan of a printed photo.
Where do I apply for an Australian visa from the UK?
Online through ImmiAccount (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au). For biometrics, visit VFS Global in London. The Australian High Commission is also in London (The Strand, WC2).
What Australian visa types are popular with British applicants?
Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) is extremely popular with young Brits aged 18-35. Other common types include Skilled Worker (subclass 482), Tourist (subclass 600), and Partner visa.
