UK Visa Photo Requirements for Filipino Applicants
Applying for a UK visa (Skilled Worker, Health & Care Worker, Student, or other category) from the Philippines? The photo is the same size as your Philippine passport photo — but the background colour requirement is different. Get that wrong and your application stalls.
The Key Difference
Both PH passport and UK visa photos are 35x45mm. But Philippine passports require a white background, while UK visas require a light grey or cream background (not white). You also cannot wear glasses in a UK visa photo.
| Size | 35x45mm (same as PH passport) |
| Background | Light grey or cream (NOT white) |
| Glasses | Not permitted |
| Head height | 29-34mm from chin to crown |
| Recency | Within last 6 months |
| Digital format | JPEG, minimum 600x750px |
Same Size, Different Background — The Trap
Philippine passport photos and UK visa photos are both 35x45mm. This tricks many Filipino applicants into thinking they can reuse their DFA passport photo for a UK visa. They cannot.
The critical difference is the background colour. Philippine passports require a pure white background. UK visa photos require a plain light grey or cream background — not white. A photo studio that shoots you against their standard white backdrop is producing the wrong photo for a UK visa.
The other difference: glasses are not allowed in UK visa photos. Philippine passport photos permit prescription glasses, so if your existing photo has glasses, it will be rejected regardless of background.
Don't reuse your DFA passport photo
Even though the size is identical (35x45mm), a Philippine passport photo has the wrong background colour for a UK visa. White backgrounds are not accepted. You need a new photo with a light grey or cream background.
PH Passport vs UK Visa: Side-by-Side
| PH Passport | 35x45mm · White background · Glasses allowed |
| UK Visa | 35x45mm · Light grey/cream background · No glasses |
Same size. Different background. Different glasses rule. Two photos, not one.
Photo Requirements for All UK Visa Types
The same 35x45mm photo specifications apply to every UK visa category: Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker (NHS roles), Student, Standard Visitor, Family, Graduate, and Youth Mobility Scheme. One photo format covers all types.
Common Mistakes Filipino Applicants Make
- Using a DFA passport photo with a white background. The size is right but the background is wrong. UK visa requires light grey or cream, not white
- Wearing glasses. Philippine passport allows prescription glasses; UK visa does not. Remove them before taking your photo
- Going to a studio and saying “passport photo.” Studios in the Philippines default to the DFA white-background format. You must specifically request “UK visa photo, light grey or cream background”
- Submitting a photo older than 6 months. UK immigration is strict about recency, especially if your appearance has changed
- Wrong digital dimensions. The online UK visa application requires minimum 600x750 pixels in JPEG format. Phone photos are typically much larger and need to be resized
Where to Get Your UK Visa Photo
Photo Studios
Studios in SM Malls, Robinsons Place, and near the DFA office offer passport photo services. Most charge ₱100-300. When requesting your photo, say:
- “UK visa photo, 35x45mm”
- “Light grey or cream background, NOT white”
- Ask for a digital copy in JPEG format for the online application
Studios near the VFS Global centre in Makati are more likely to know UK visa specs, but always confirm the background requirement.
VFS Global In-House
VFS Global’s Makati centre offers photo services during your biometric appointment. Expect to pay ₱250-400. The photos are guaranteed to meet UK specs, but the queue can be long.

| Photo studio (SM Mall) | ₱100-300 | 15-30 min |
