UK Visa Photo Requirements for Nigerian Applicants
Applying for a UK visa (Skilled Worker, Student, or Family) from Nigeria? The photo is the same size as your Nigerian passport photo — but the background colour requirement is different. That one difference causes most rejections.
The Key Difference
Both Nigerian passport and UK visa photos are 35x45mm. But Nigerian passports require a white background, while UK visas require a light grey or cream background (not white). You also cannot wear glasses in a UK visa photo.
| Size | 35x45mm (same as Nigerian passport) |
| Background | Light grey or cream (NOT white) |
| Glasses | Not permitted |
| Head height | 29-34mm from chin to crown |
| Recency | Within last 6 months |
| Digital format | JPEG, minimum 600x750px |
Same Size, Different Background — The Most Common Mistake
Nigerian passport photos and UK visa photos are both 35x45mm. This leads many Nigerian applicants to assume their NIS passport photo will work for a UK visa. It will not.
The problem is the background colour. Nigerian passports require a pure white background. UK visa photos require a plain light grey or cream background — white is not accepted. A photo taken against a white wall or white studio backdrop is the wrong photo for a UK visa.
Glasses are also not allowed in UK visa photos. If your existing Nigerian passport photo shows you wearing prescription glasses, it will be rejected on two counts — wrong background and glasses.
White background = rejected
Your Nigerian passport photo has the right size (35x45mm) but the wrong background for a UK visa. White is not accepted. You need a new photo with a light grey or cream background.
Nigerian Passport vs UK Visa: Side-by-Side
| Nigerian Passport | 35x45mm · White background · Glasses allowed |
| UK Visa | 35x45mm · Light grey/cream background · No glasses |
Same size. Different background. Different glasses rule. You need two separate photos.
Photo Requirements for All UK Visa Types
The same 35x45mm photo specifications apply to every UK visa category: Skilled Worker, Student, Standard Visitor, Family, Graduate, and Global Talent. One photo format covers all types.
Common Mistakes Nigerian Applicants Make
- Submitting a white-background NIS passport photo. The size is correct but the background colour is wrong. UK visa requires light grey or cream
- Wearing glasses. Nigerian passport allows prescription glasses; UK visa does not
- Telling the studio “passport photo.” Studios in Lagos and Abuja default to NIS white-background format. Specify “UK visa photo, light grey or cream background”
- Using a photo older than 6 months. UK immigration requires recent photos that reflect your current appearance
- Low-resolution digital photo. The online UK visa application requires minimum 600x750 pixels. Some studios provide low-resolution files optimised for printing only
Where to Get Your UK Visa Photo
Photo Studios
Studios near TLScontact centres and in major commercial areas of Lagos (Victoria Island, Ikeja) and Abuja (Wuse, Maitama) offer passport photo services. Most charge ₦2,000-5,000. When requesting your photo, specify:
- “UK visa photo, 35x45mm”
- “Light grey or cream background — NOT white”
- Ask for a high-resolution digital copy in JPEG format
Studios close to the TLScontact offices are more familiar with UK visa requirements, but always confirm the background colour before they shoot.
TLScontact In-House
TLScontact centres in Lagos and Abuja offer photo services during your biometric appointment. Expect to pay ₦3,000-5,000. Photos are guaranteed to meet UK specs, but queues can be long.
Online
Take a photo at home with your phone and use an online tool to format it with the correct background and dimensions. This gives you both the digital upload file and a printable sheet.

| Photo studio (Lagos/Abuja) | ₦2,000-5,000 | 15-30 min |
