Photo rejected for shadow on background

Shadow on background

Wrong head size — Face must occupy 70-80% of the photo with head top 3mm from upper edge

Non-white background — Background must be plain white, evenly lit, without shadows or patterns

Glasses glare or obstruction — If wearing glasses, lenses must not have glare and frames cannot cover eyes or eyebrows

Closed or covered eyes — Eyes must be open, clearly visible, and not covered by hair

Wrong expression — Must have neutral expression with closed mouth, no smiling

Photo too old — Must be taken within the last 6 months showing current appearance

Shadows on face — Face must be evenly lit without shadows or light reflections

Digital alterations — Using filters or retouching will cause rejection as it interferes with biometric recognition

Printing Your Photo

For mail-in applications, print your photo on 4×6 photo paper at any drugstore. Our download includes a print-ready template with multiple photos — you only need 2 for most applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the Polish ID card photo?

The Polish ID card (Dowód Osobisty) requires a 35x45mm photo, the same size as the Polish passport. For digital submission, the minimum size is 492x633 pixels with a maximum file size of 2.5MB.

Can I wear glasses in my Polish ID card photo?

Glasses are allowed but not recommended. If you wear them, the lenses must not have glare, the frames cannot cover your eyes or eyebrows, and the lenses cannot be tinted. It's easier to take the photo without glasses.

Is the Polish ID card photo the same as the passport photo?

Yes, since March 2015 Poland uses the same biometric photo requirements for both the ID card (Dowód Osobisty) and passport — 35x45mm with face occupying 70-80% of the photo.

Can I smile in my Polish ID card photo?

No. You must have a neutral facial expression with your mouth closed. Smiling can interfere with biometric facial recognition and will cause your photo to be rejected.

How recent must my Polish ID card photo be?

The photo must be taken within the last 6 months before submitting your application. Older photos will be rejected even if you look the same.

Can I wear a head covering in my Polish ID card photo?

Only if required by your religion. You must provide a certificate from a religious community registered in Poland confirming your membership. Your full face must still be visible.
