Frequently Asked Questions
What size photo do I need for a Greek ID card?
Greek ID cards require a 36x36mm (3.6x3.6cm) square photo. This is different from the 35x45mm size used for Greek passports and many other European documents.
Can I wear glasses in my Greek ID photo?
Yes, you can wear clear prescription glasses if there is no reflection obscuring your eyes and the frame doesn't cover your facial features. Sunglasses, tinted lenses, and photochromic (light-adjusting) glasses are not allowed.
How do I submit my photo for the new Greek ID card?
For applications within Greece, photos must be submitted digitally through the myPhoto service on gov.gr. A certified photographer can upload your photo, or you can have it taken at the issuing authority. Printed photos are accepted until January 31, 2026.
What's the difference between Greek ID and passport photo requirements?
Greek ID cards use a 36x36mm square format, while Greek passports require 40x60mm. The ID card photo is more compact and square-shaped. Both require a neutral expression, white/light background, and no sunglasses.
How long is the new Greek ID card valid?
The new biometric Greek ID cards issued since September 2023 are valid for 10 years. Old-format ID cards will cease to be valid after August 2026, when the new digital ID becomes mandatory for EU travel.
