Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a Brazil ID card (RG/CIN) photo?
3x4cm (30x40mm). This is the standard Brazilian document photo format as specified in Decree 9.278/2018. It's smaller than the US 2x2 inch and European 35x45mm formats.
Can I wear glasses in my Brazilian ID photo?
No. Glasses are not allowed in CIN photos. The only exception is dark glasses for people with total visual impairment.
Do I need to bring a photo for my new Brazilian ID (CIN)?
No. For the new CIN, photos are taken at the identification institute during your appointment. You only need to bring a 3x4 photo if applying for a child aged 0-2 years who cannot pose independently.
Are religious head coverings allowed in CIN photos?
Yes. Head coverings for religious reasons are permitted, as long as they are neutral-colored and allow full visibility of the face and neck contour.
What is the difference between RG and CIN?
The CIN (Carteira de Identidade Nacional) is replacing the old RG (Registro Geral). The CIN follows ICAO standards with a machine-readable zone (MRZ) like passports, and can be used for travel within Mercosur countries. Current RG documents remain valid until 2032.
